Stand up, New Yorkers!!
Newark to Brooklyn??

boredom
im gonna be visiting new york in a few weeks but i've got a question as to how im gonna get my butt from newark airport in new jersey to my final destination which is brooklyn (williamsburg to be exact).

i mapquested the route and it says it's about 1/2 an hour from the airport to brooklyn by taxi. would that my best bet? also, how much do you think they'll charge?? i was in newark 2 weeks ago and the cab driver told me that to get to midtown manhattan, he was gonna charge $70 approx. what the eff! that seems a little high... also i'm a little worried that new jersey cabs wont wanna go all the way into brooklyn cos it's out of their "area"? (haha yah im full of pointless concerns lol)

2 weeks ago my friend and i took a coach bus from the newark airport into manhattan (and it was only about $15 each way)... SO should i do that again and then once i get to manhattan, attempt to get a taxi and cab it the rest of the way to brooklyn???

so lemme know, kind livejournal folks!

xx!

if you dont want to drop 50-70 for a cab, take the bus then the subway to brooklyn it will cost you under 20 (hopstop.com)

or you can take new jersey transit (PATH). There is a bus that picks you up at the terminal (you'd have to look it up but I think maybe it's #64?), and the PATH train would take you to a stop in Manhattan for $1.50 or so. From there you could cab it and it would be reasonable, or get on the subway. This is a huge pain in the ass, but probably your most economical option.

PATH doesn't stop at Newark Airport. :)

She'd need to take the AirTrain to the Newark Airport NJ Transit train stop then head to Penn Station, from there she could take the A/C/E to 14th and xfer to the L train to Williamsburg. :)

no, but there's a bus to the path. i said that.

Ahh, apologies on that.

I found it easier to use the trains last time I flew into Newark tho. :)

i also said it was a pain in the butt, but prob the cheapest option. you should read people's posts b4 you give them guff for them! ;)

Settle down Beavis. :)

Since people ask this stuff, I did not want anyone to be confused. They too may have read that (is passing as I did) that the PATH stopped at Newark. :)

'Tis a subtle balance between cheap and PITA, hopefully AirTrain/NJT/Subway is a happy middle ground!

It costs a bit more than PATH (about $15) but the easiest way by far is to take the airport monorail to the New Jersey Transit airport station, take NJT to Penn Station, and then take the subway from there (A/C/E to 14th, get the L from there). More details here.

Agreed. And no worries about hitting traffic. And you will hit traffic.

Thirded! I have done this before and it was simple and easy. :)

Recommending this also. Very, very simple and pain free.
12th-May-2008 03:19 pm (UTC)
Yeah, this is what I would do.

agreed! i always take the L to 14th/8th ave, switch to the ACE, and take NJ Transit to the Newark Airport stop. the 15 dollars includes the AirTrain that takes you to your terminal. It's very stress free. I hate the path and the amount of platform switching, and NJT is usually pretty reliable. You don't have to worry about street traffic and the AirTrain comes frequently.

I believe that cab price. I paid $50 for a cab to LaGuardia from Bay Ridge Brooklyn so I would expect double to Jersey. I would second the PATH train. That train is fast and barely ever crowded except for rush hour and weekend nights.

i used to go from williamsburg to the newark airport and back all the time. i used the coach bus that will drop you off at either port authority, bryant park, or grand central. you should just get off at port authority, and take the a, c, or down to 14th and cath the l. then you're guaranteed a seat on the l with all your luggage. =) i think the coach bus is between $15-20.

I second the bus! It's super easy.

Last time i took a cab from EWR to Brooklyn, it cost my company 100$ with tolls and tips and everything. Plus the cab driver was a real snot. NJ cab drivers usually don't know how to get around Brooklyn very well.

i was in a cab once coming from newark, going to williamsburg. it was about 2am, too early/late for any other form of transportation (bus, train, etc). the cabbie said he'd take me. then, in chinatown, he stopped and forced me to get out of the car, dumped all my stuff on the sidewalk, and took off. thankfully i got another cab, but good grief.

Jesus, that's miserable! I hope you reported his ass, that could've been really dangerous!

honestly, the whole thing happened so fast that i didn't have time. i wish that i had.

haha oh god... thats what happened to my friend and i a few weeks ago in manhattan. it was 6am and we needed to be in times square from 57th and 7th (i think). he said hed take us, then 5 minutes later, he stopped, waved his hand at us and said 'okay you can get out now'. i was like 'are you kidding? i might be a tourist, but im not an idiot!'. then he got out, opened our door and said 'okay... out'. hahah i was laughing so much from shock, i didnt have time to get upset.

is that a common thing in new york? to kick PAYING customers out of their cabs???

i mapquested the route and it says it's about 1/2 an hour from the airport to brooklyn by taxi.

That is under only the best possible conditions. If you hit one patch of traffic anywhere, its going over. And unless you're coming in at midnight, you're going to hit traffic.

definitely go with the PATH.

I didn't go from the airport, just from some random office building in Newark, and I didn't go to brooklyn, just to manhattan...
but it was really easy and cost like $10.
