Veteran's Day, Nov. 11: colleges closed, or not?
1st-Oct-2008 10:44 am
Yes, I know Veteran's Day, November 11 (Tuesday), is both a federal holiday and a NY State holiday.

This might not be as stupid question, but need to clarify whether or not colleges are closed (or at least classes cancelled) for the holiday. Though I go to a CUNY college (and I assume it is the same policy at *all* CUNY colleges), I am curious about what non-CUNY colleges in NY do.

Thus far I've only asked two different (low on the totem pole) campus staff (in different departments) about the holiday and I got two different answers. Even my professors don't seem to agree: one has no class on the day, but the other has a scheduled class. Misc.: if anyone knows what department on each campus would be the absolute authority on what days the college is actually closed, please let me know. (Not counting the usual incredulous front desk intern that won't check with anyone in the back and that replies in one word sentences, with generous eye-rolling.)

columbia has class that day.

Columbia has classes on Rosh Hashanna too. But CUNY had them off.

true. but we get Election Day and the day before it off, the week before. :D

(i just found out a couple of weeks ago that the Election Day holiday dates from the 1968 protests. apparently, we get that extra day off so we can protest without missing classes.)

new school has classes. (though we get the first day of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur off. We also have classes on Columbus Day.)

Did you check your school's academic calendar?
1st-Oct-2008 03:15 pm (UTC)
The Registrar's Office would probably be the place to call, but you should check the website first for the semester's calendar. (Which should be your first stop anyway). Keep in mind that administrative office can be closed for a holiday, but classes can still be in session.

I have the day off from NYU.
1st-Oct-2008 03:27 pm (UTC)
Really? I don't.
1st-Oct-2008 03:38 pm (UTC)
Continuing studies. :)
1st-Oct-2008 04:06 pm (UTC) - me = Grad school
Ahh. Yeah, we have Monday/Tuesday off for Columbus Day (or maybe that's just my Tuesday professor), but we do have class on Veteran's day.
1st-Oct-2008 06:51 pm (UTC) - Re: me = Grad school
Lucky. The law school doesn't give us anything off.
2nd-Oct-2008 04:01 am (UTC) - Re: me = Grad school
The whole school has Monday/Tuesday off, it's on the academic calendar.
1st-Oct-2008 03:26 pm (UTC)
Our office is open, but schools are more liberal about holidays. I don't know the answer but good luck either way!
1st-Oct-2008 03:27 pm (UTC)
which cuny do you go to? I'm at Hunter and we do not have the day off from school
1st-Oct-2008 03:32 pm (UTC)
pratt has class
1st-Oct-2008 04:02 pm (UTC)
CCNY is closed on Columbus Day.
1st-Oct-2008 04:28 pm (UTC)
I go to John Jay and we have class that day, I checked the Academic Calendar. :)

As for definitive dept, probably the Registrar's Office I'd say.
1st-Oct-2008 05:24 pm (UTC)
well apparently City College and Hunter do NOT have off that day.

I found that out by looking at the academic calendars for those two schools:

If you're interested in other schools, why don't you go to their websites and look at their calendars as well?
1st-Oct-2008 07:06 pm (UTC)
Wouldn't "college closed" imply that there wouldn't be any classes? Because on the CCNY academic calender it says "college closed".
1st-Oct-2008 07:11 pm (UTC)

Well I guess if you're looking at Columbus Day, yes the college is closed...

But since the poster was asking about VETERAN'S DAY on NOVEMBER 11, and nothing is listed next to that date, I would take that to imply that there IS class.
1st-Oct-2008 07:14 pm (UTC)
Oh, okay. Yeah, it is closed then.
1st-Oct-2008 07:15 pm (UTC)
Class then. Whatever.
1st-Oct-2008 06:15 pm (UTC)
I believe most colleges have classes on Veteran's Day while most have Columbus day off.
2nd-Oct-2008 06:09 am (UTC)
CUNY had Mon, Tues, AND Wed off for Rosh Hashanah. :) We get 2 days off for Yom Kippur as well as that other mid-October holiday. Classes ARE in session for CUNY on Veteran's Day. For other colleges just check their academic calendars.
